Chessington World of Adventures, Chessington, Surrey

Great theme park just outside London, with plenty of rides, plus a zoo and Sea Life centre. Particularly good for younger children as it's not dominated by extreme rides, and the breadth of activities for little ones is excellent.

The park is split into various themed kingdoms, e.g. Mystic East, Pirates Cove, Toytown. Each has its own unique feel and some are tailored to specific ages.

In all, there are more than 30 rides. The biggest thrills are perhaps:

Kobra – Which spins explorers through the air on a 90m track at a dizzying 43mph.

Vampire – A classic suspended rollercoaster that leaves your feet dangling as you shoot through the tree tops.

Dragon’s Fury – A coaster with a twist: your carriage spins, spins and spins some more!

For smaller children, including Fred, firm favourites include the fun show at the Dragon’s Tale Theatre, the Sea Dragons carousel of Viking Ships and Tiny Truckers.

2010 also saw the addition of an entirely new land – Wild Asia – with an exotic Eastern theme.

Chessington’s Zoo is substantial, with more than 1,000 animals big and small, and Sea Life (its aquarium) has interactive rockpools, daily feeding sessions and a breathtaking walkthrough ocean tunnel. Both are included in the admission price.

Car: Chessington is 12 miles from London on the A243, just 2 miles from the A3 and M25 (Junction 9 or 10).

From the South, take M25 Junction 9
From the North, take M25 Junction 10
From London, take the A3 to Hook
Chessington is then signposted from the A243

There’s plenty of free parking.

Train: Chessington South Station, and a 10 minute walk.

Bus: Chessington is served by regular bus services. Take the 465 bus from Kingston to Chessington, or the 467 bus from Epsom to Chessington.

The full Theme Park opens from 23rd March to 4th November 2012.

During the winter, the Zoo is open every weekend and during school holidays.

The resort hotel is open all year round.

The Park and Zoo both open at 10am. Normal close for the Park is 5pm, with the Zoo and Sea Life Centre closing at 3pm.

Park hours extend to 6pm in late July and August, and to 8pm around Halloween.
